The History of Valentine's Day
Did you know ..................
That St Valentine's Day is named after a shootout some gangsters in the US did on a February 14th back in history?
Perhaps it really does commemorate the day in 269 AD when St Valentine died - but not before he sneaked a love note into the hands of his jailer's daughter.... or so some stories say! The true origins are somewhat hazy... according to the Catholic Encyclopedia (St. Valentine) there were at least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, mentioned in the early martyrologies under the date of 14 February.... which according to Mystical-www is also known as the Eve of Roman Lupercalia as this festival started on the 15 February.
Valentine's Day has traditionally involved the exchange of personally designed hand made decorative cards or notes, enscribed with declarations of love, romantic poetry and literature or even marriage proposals which even today are sent anonymously...... some of the meanings and traditions may have changed but the thrill of sending a card or gift to a loved one from a 'secret' admirer to see if they can unravel the mystery, is just as fun and exciting as being on the receiving end!!
